The AMERICAN MEDEVAC story inspired by a single TV News Report from Vietnam
More than 40 years ago CBS News cameraman Greg Cooke and I flew a combat medevac mission in Vietnam that became the most haunting memory from a lifetime in journalism. We could not forget the men we met that day — the Americal wounded and the men of the 236th Army Medical Detachment who risked their lives to save them.
Our story lasted just seven minutes on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. But for Greg and me, decades later, the memories refused to fade so we set out to find them and to tell the stories of their lives. To our surprise, the Medevac pilot and co-pilot had never "met" any of the wounded they rescued. NOW they have!
We discovered that for the wounded and the crew, healing those haunting memories continues to this day and their stories may help guide the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
